Putting information back into biological communication.
2010
At the heart of many debates on communication is the concept of information. There is an intuitive sense in which communication implies the transfer of some kind of information, probably the reason why information is an essential ingredient in most definitions of communication. However, information has also been an endless source of misunderstandings, and recent accounts have proposed that information should be dropped from a formal definition of communication. In this article, we re-evaluate the merits and the internal logic of information-based vs. information-free approaches and conclude that information-free approaches are conceptually incomplete and operationally hindered. Instead, we …
Information Content Analysis of TV Advertising - The Spanish Case
2015
Atter analyzing the information content of 477 ads aired by the two main Spanish TV channels we found that not all ads provided objective information, but that the proportion of informative ads and the amount of information carried by them seems to be greater than in other countries of our economic environment. There were no significant differences in informative content between the two channels, but there were differences with regard to product categories advertised. Future research could be directed towards expanding the categories for information analysis of TV ads given their continued presence in the life of the average consumer.
La selección de las noticias en el entorno de un centro de documentación de información de actualidad
2002
In information retrieval systems operation, lack of adequate selection criteria originates information overload and has negative consequences in relevance judgments. In the context of a news reference service, three leveis in the selection process are proposed. The first one relates to the type of sources covered by the system, the second set of criteria determines which publications are included in the process of document analysis. The last one applies to the selection of individual documents based on their informative content. La falta de criterios idóneos de selección puede provocar un grave problema de saturación informativa, lo que repercute negativamente en la búsqueda posterior de in…
Saliency in spectral images
2011
International audience; Even though the study of saliency for color images has been thoroughly investigated in the past, very little attention has been given to datasets that cannot be displayed on traditional computer screens such as spectral images. Nevertheless, more than a means to predict human gaze, the study of saliency primarily allows for measuring infor- mative content. Thus, we propose a novel approach for the computation of saliency maps for spectral images. Based on the Itti model, it in- volves the extraction of both spatial and spectral features, suitable for high dimensionality images. As an application, we present a comparison framework to evaluate how dimensionality reduct…
